San Jose del Cabo, Mexico is a a beautiful and historic town full of life (and colorful flags) in the Cabo region of Baja, Mexico. A bit quieter and classier than Cabo itself, people from all walks of life come to San Jose del Cabo to enjoy a variety of cultural pursuits and outdoor activities. Here are some must visit things to do and places to see  while visiting this beautiful place.

Explore Downtown + The Art District

Visiting the downtown segment of San Jose del Cabo is a must! Downtown is where much of the arts and cultural sites will be as well as most of the finer restaurants. The downtown is extra extra hot during the daytime and so most tourists tend to visit after 4pm.

From shops to cafes to boutiques, it can take hours to explore it all.

During the summer months, check out of the Thursday Night Art Walk.in the Plaza Central. Some tour companies will also do historic art walks on Thursday evenings.

Some visitors like to meander the streets, admiring the local graffiti and the colorful Mexican bunting flags that fly over the streets. Most of these flags can be found along Jose Maria Moreles and along Ignacio Comonfort and Alvaro Obregon.

Adjacent to the Plaza Central is the Misión San José del Cabo, which is the main historic church in town that was built back in 1730. In front of the church's plaza is the popular San Jose del Cabo sign, which is usually chocked full of tourists doing selfies and group photos.

While in town, there are tons of boutiques and souvenir stores to get lost in as well as spend a good amount of cash. Let me say this....Mexico is NO longer cheap! Here you can find the beautiful handmade Oaxaca embroidery panels that range from coasters to tablecloths.

As a vintage and textile collector, I nearly dropped dead when I asked the price in several shops. For a tablecloth, they cost around $500-700USD. Some claim it does take months (up to 6) to complete, which makes sense but most Americans (at least not me!) dont have that type of cash to spend on a tablecloth
.

Many table runners as you'll see below are machine made and will be less expensive. The hand embroidered Oaxaca panels are more expensive.

Get in Touch with The Local Flora & Fauna - Visit Flora Farms

Picture
If searching for Heaven on Earth, Flora Farms has got this covered. Whether you want to do a cooking class or book a table for a farm to table meal, Flora Farms is a gorgeous natural and organic farm that looks and feels like a Utopia that you read about in fairy tales. They use all-natural farm techniques where the plants have symbiotic relationships to help one another grow, along with proper composting, that pesticides are not needed.

We experienced one of the vegetarian cooking classes and was one of the best experiences I had in Cabo. Everything we made was fresh from the garden and some of the best homemade food we've ever had.

Get on or In the Water

One of the biggest bummers about San Jose del Cabo is the lack of swimmable beaches. The ocean currents can be dangerous so it is wise to follow local rules and authorities on this; however, there are a few swimmable beaches in the area.

If you are staying at one of the local resorts, you'll have unlimited access to the ocean and the beach front. However, most of this area in the hotel zone is not for swimming.

One of the closet beaches to the downtown is just at the tip of the harbor area, and is called, Public Beach East Side. This is a small but quiet beach that mainly attracts locals. It is one of the few spots that has relatively calm water and can swim a ways from the shoreline. Local efforts have created rustic recycle bins that mimic the local ocean life, such as the blow fish as shown above in hopes to inspire people to recycle more and stop throwing plastic onto the beaches.

If exploring the harbor area, there are some shops and cafes. Some spots are unassuming and dirty but overall an interesting way to examine the local life. If hungry or need a spot to cool off, visit the Coffee Lab. I recommend sitting on the covered roof top deck and enjoy the view of the harbor with a freshly made iced tea!

For those want to get deep down into the ocean, there are plenty of scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities. There are plenty of local tour operators, but I recommendEast Cape Explorers that features a variety of scuba diving and snorkeling day trips. They had top notch customer service and very qualified staff to ensure everyone from child to adult would stay safe.

What is your favorite activity or place to see in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
